Domaine de l'Elephant
Our most prestigious winery, Domaine de l’Elephant is setting the new benchmark for what will be coming out of the Roussillon in the years to come with their first two vintages and already some great recognition in the international press. Future cult wine of the region made with Michel Tardieu and Renaud Chastagnol, you are in to a true surprise with this micro production winery, highly allocated! The Vineyard spans 3 villages: Vingrau, Opoul, and Espira de l’Agly.
Terroirs: clay, limestone, black schist. Age of vineyards: 9 to 100+ years old. Grenache Noir 7 acres, Carignan Noir 2.48 acres, Syrah 0.7 acres , Grenache blanc/gris 3 acres, Macabeo 0.9 acres, and Muscat 0.7 acres.
Harvest: By hand in small 20kg crates, with sorting in the vineyard and at the cellar.
Fermentations: Long fermentations in concrete or stainless steel vats as well as oak barrels. Only indigenous yeasts are used. Minimum use of SO2.
“In my 20th anniversary issue of The Wine Advocate (December 1998), I listed Michel Tardieu and his partner, Dominique Laurent, as two of the most influential people of the past 20 years… This superstar estate in the southern Rhone will have an impact for decades to come. It is mind-boggling that he (Tardieu) is able to buy juice and fashion wines that are so extraordinarily faithful to their appellations, yet possess a level of richness and complexity that elevates them to the ranks of the finest wines of their respective appellations… Robert Parker
